Ed Wiener (1918-1991)
Modernest Jeweler
- Served in World War II working in a radio assembly shop and discovered he had skilled hands.
- Became a jeweler through mostly self-taught realizations and some discussions with artisans and artists.
- Began to make jewelry in earnest from 1946 till his death in 1991
c.1945:
- Took general crafts course at Columbia University
- Set up a studio at home with his wife – Doris Levin
- Crafted bent-wire monogram pins to sell
c.1946:
- Opened a summer gallery in Provincetown MA and sold his jewelry and other trinkets.
- Opened a New York Studio
c.1947: Opened Arts and Ends on 55th St.
c.1966: Went to the Cluny Museum in Paris and to the gem-cutting centers in Jaipur, India and revised his whole jewelry design aesthetic.
c.1971-1981: the store was on Madison Ave.
His daughter, Michele Wiener inherited 1700 molds and she markets the work as “Ed Wiener Jewelry”.
