Gold and Gemstone Hair Comb, c.1888.

An ornamental item that is worn in the hair strictly as decoration or with the purpose of holding the hair in a particular way. Used throughout history, 15th-century combs were often shaped like crowns and decorated with gemstones. Art Nouveau combs are often enameled. Combs can be made of metal or carved from horn, bone, ivory, etc. They can be plain or, since the Renaissance, they are often enhanced with gems and intricate designs.
