Chasing is a process whereby the front surface of a metal object is decorated by indenting the metal without cutting or engraving the surface. The metal is usually secured into a bowl that contains pitch. A hammer is used to strike a punch-like tool, referred to as a chaser, thereby indenting the metal.  A metal object that has been decorated by the chasing process is said to have been chased.
