Limoges enamel is a very fine type of enameling using a technique to paint the enamel on the metal surface. This was perfected in Limoges, France in the 15th century. Dark enamel was applied first with subsequent layers of translucent enamel allowing the dark to show through. Areas without enamel were generally gilded.
